MTB Coast to Coast – St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay
If you’re thinking about riding a mountain bike coast to coast, the challenge & quality of the riding is likely to be top of the list. So the route is from St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay as we reckon it has the best trails & scenery. We head through the Lakes to the Dales via Kirkby Stephen, then the North York Moors.
Black Sail Pass, Garburn Pass, the Pennine Way & Swaledale are all on route. As well as great trails, the scenery is stunning. It can be done in fewer days but that means head down & flat out with no time to take anything in. You’ll need to be OK with riding about 35 or more hard off-road miles a day – some days are shorter though. Remember off road miles are more strenuous than road miles by varying amounts. In general though, the riding gets easier each day. Although it’s a mountain bike coast to coast, all of the various routes also include road riding, but we keep off-road as much as we can. We’ll be riding for 6 days which gives a bit of time to look at the scenery & take in the surroundings, although it’s still hard work!
The cost includes accommodation on route, but if you need to stay overnight in St Bees before the start there is usually some available to book. We ride Monday – Saturday inclusive.
The trip is supported & all you’ll need to carry is your day pack with your usual stash for a day’s riding. Your bag will arrive at the accommodation before we do.
You just need to make your way to St Bees. If you need public transport there’s a train station at St Bees or if the times don’t match up, Whitehaven is close.
At Robin Hood’s Bay there’s a taxi firm but a relative or friend to pick you up is easiest. Packhorse also do a transport & parking service where they will take you from your vehicle to St Bees & back to your vehicle from Robin Hoods Bay.
Book using the Paypal buttons or phone to pay by card or online bank transfer. A deposit (or full payment if you prefer) is required to secure each place & the balance is required no later than 8 weeks before the start date. Full payment is needed if you’re booking with less than 8 weeks to go.
Although Chasing Trails is insured, travel insurance is recommended in case you have to cancel close to the trip where a refund isn’t possible or you have to cut your trip short for any reason.
If you like the sound of a tour but you’re not sure about your technical ability feel free to phone for a chat. A skills day before the trip will boost your ability & confidence. Some discount will be available on a skills day if you’ve booked a place on a guided tour. A day’s coaching makes a huge difference to skills & confidence.
