Bike maintenance courses for mountain bikes & road bikes

Bike maintenance courses

Gain the skills and confidence to service and repair your own bike. A well maintained bike is obviously safer and a lot less likely to break down. It will last longer and cost you less in the long run, and if you’re unlucky and something goes wrong out and about, you’re more likely to be able to repair it and ride home if you have the right skills.

What bikes are covered?

We run bike maintenance courses for mountain bikes, road bikes, hybrids, cyclo-cross etc. We can also cover e-bikes, but just the components that you’ll find on regular bicycles, not the electrics or motor.

Course numbers?

Our courses are usually run as 1:1 or 1:2 days with the 1:2 courses for people to book as a pair. This where the vast majority of demand has always been. However, if you have a group of 3 to 8 people organised you can book at course group prices.

Course structure

As you’d expect, 1:1 and 1:2 courses allow us to shape the day specifically to your needs, so you can cover the tasks that will be most use to you. Just get in touch to arrange a date that suits.

The course includes plenty of tea and coffee and some lunch (in normal times…) – can’t tell you what it will be on the day but let us know about any allergies or dislikes when you book.

Prices:

Numbers Weekday Sat or Sun
1:1 £175 £195
1:2* £225 £255
Group of 3 to 8 £380 £420

*total price for 2 people

While you’re here…

If you want to make a few days of it, add a skills course or guided ride or head to Dalby or the North York Moors to do your own thing.
Some cycle friendly accommodation info can be found on the following links:

  • As recommended by North Yorkshire Cycling

Chasing Trails gift vouchers are always available if you’re booking as a present. Just ask & we can post or email a voucher. Email is ideal if you’ve left it to the last minute! The receiver can then book a date when convenient.

Booking a Bike Maintenance Course

To book either type of course, you can use the form below to select a date & pay by card (with or without a PayPal account). Alternatively phone or email to book or ask any questions. Payments by online bank transfer are also great if you prefer.
You can book 1:1 or 1:2 days online but please get in touch if you want to arrange a course for more people.
There is an extra charge for group maintenance courses to cover premises (unless you provide the space).

Service & repair courses

This course covers skills needed to service & repair your bike. Even if you don’t have time to do your own servicing it’s helpful to have the knowledge for trail-side repairs like fixing a broken chain & replacing a cable.

Although workshop tools are nice, you can complete most common repairs with just a multi-tool and a few other affordable bike specific tools, so you won’t need to rush out to buy a huge set of expensive tools.

The course cost includes gear cables and a range of KMC chains are available for reasonable prices. KMC make the toughest and longest lasting chains in my experience and the fact that they’re also good on price is just a bonus.

A maintenance course is a great investment, after a few repairs you’ve paid for the course.

Bicycle strip & rebuild courses

Some people prefer a strip down & rebuild course. We like to offer what people want, so this is another option. You end up with similar skills & knowledge to the standard course but from a different approach. We’d say pick the one you like the sound of or phone for some advice.

A good practical reason to do a strip & rebuild course is if you want to get your frame resprayed. If you’re local & you want to do a 1:1 course as two half days or evenings, you can then send your frame to get re-sprayed & return for the rebuild when it’s done.

If you know that some components need replacing bring them along & feel free to ask for advice before the course

Again, the course includes gear cables and KMC chains are available. We offer 1:1, 1:2 or group courses if you have a group arranged. Max group size on the strip & rebuild course is 4 people to keep everything running smoothly.
